Chris and I just signed off on our home study report. Now that everything is finalized, we will be put on the waiting list!
Here is How it Works
When a birth mother decides she wants to put her baby up for adoption, she will contact Catholic Charities.The agency will then meet with her and compile a list of things she is looking for in the adoptive parents. Then Catholic Charities will pull four groups of adoptive parents that match that description. The birth mother will pick one family and they will be contacted.This can happen anywhere from a few months into the pregnancy all the way up until the baby is delivered in the hospital.
What Does that Mean for Us?
We wait. We wait patiently. Chris and I are planners and we like to be prepared and know when things are happening. Since we may not have any idea until the baby is already born, we imagine this will be the hardest part of the process for us. We know that nothing about this process is our timing. We are ready to wait as long as it takes in order to get the baby we are meant to parent.
Meanwhile...
The baby's room is ready and waiting. We have all the things we need, minus a few. It is exciting to see everything come together. I have started on a project for the baby's room that I am very excited about. I will post pictures when it is completed. Chris has found a project to work on for the baby that is so Chris I know the baby will keep it forever, even if he/she grows out of it. Again, pictures will be posted when it is complete.

Getting Closer!
Our home studies are all wrapped up!!! Chris finished his individual on August 11. Our case worker told us it would take three to four weeks to complete our report, which worked for us. It is always nice to know the timeframe for things, especially since most things with adoption are so open ended.
Yesterday we received an email with the first draft of our report written. In this process, our case worker writes the report, sends it to us for review and revisions and then we send it back. Once all corrections are made, then we sign off on it and we are officially on the list. We finished our revisions today and look forward to signing off on it soon. We are ahead of schedule!
Something unexpected when reviewing the report was reading quotes from our references. It was so touching and even emotional. I don't think those friends will ever know how much their letters meant to Chris and me. Our child will know of all the support that we had throughout this process. It has been amazing!
In the meantime, Chris and I have been shopping and hitting garage sales. It has been a lot of fun and a wonderful bonding experience. We have a couple of classes we are taking this week and an even bigger event for new parents at the KCI Expo this weekend.
My sister is pregnant and due in November on my birthday! We are so excited for Vickie and Ethan. Her shower this weekend and we are looking forward to visiting with lots of good friends and gleaning all the advice we can. Vickie and I are so excited that our children will grow up together and be so close in age!
As we get ready to turn a corner and learn even more patience through waiting, please pray for us and for God's timing throughout it all. Please pray for the birthmother. Our prayer is that she has the strength, support and closer necessary when giving her child up for adoption. We do not want to lose sight of what she is going through even though we are so excited.

It Has Been Awhile
Hey Gang,
So, it has been awhile. As adoptions go, there is a lot of wait time. I wish I could blame my blogging absence purely on that fact. Sadly, I cannot. There has been new news, but life got ahead of us. It is now time to catch you all up.
Last when we left you, Chris and I had just finished the second half of our paperwork and turned it in one day shy of our thirty day deadline. Peggy, our case worker, was having knee surgery around the same time so we didn't expect to hear anything right away.
About a month later, we received an email saying that Catholic Charities was hiring a new social worker to conduct home studies. We were informed that the new case worker was assigned to us and that once her contract with the agency was finished, we would be contacted. At first, we had very mixed feelings. On one hand, we really liked Peggy and were worried about her. (She is doing well by the way.) On the other hand, we were excited because the next step of our process was right around the corner.
(At this time we suggest you refer back to our first blog and reread the section entitled "Our Next Step" to get the full picture of what was about to happen next.)
As you may have guessed, Catholic Charities hired Nikki. Nikki still works for the international company, but now she works for Catholic Charities, too. Needless to say, Chris and I were very excited by this news. God is good!
A few weeks later, we still hadn't heard anything. At this point it had been forty days since we submitted our paperwork. We were told in the beginning that we had 120 days to complete the home study process and we were at day 73. I was starting to get really nervous because I was hoping to get the home studies completed before I had to go back to work on August 9th.
Well, late last Thursday evening...the phone rang. Of course, Chris and I missed the call, but as we listened to the voice mail, we were instantly overcome with emotion (excitement, relief, excitement, and so on). We immediately called her back and she was just as happy as we were about being connected once more. We all three ended up talking on the phone for forty minutes. We all wanted the same things, and we were ready to get moving. All four of the home studies were scheduled over the next two weeks. They consist of two individual home studies, and then we have two home studies together.
My individual is tomorrow. It should only take about an hour. I am very excited and not really nervous. I don't know if it just hasn't hit me yet, but I am ready. I want to move forward, and I know we have the best advocate. Within the next couple of weeks our home studies will be wrapped up, and in a few more weeks our profile/report will be written and we will officially be on the waiting list.

Reaching Another Milestone
Chris and I finished our paperwork and hand delivered it one day short of our thirty day deadline!
In the beginning, we knew the amount of information needed was overwhelming; however, it was fun as we began to check one thing after another. We completed half of the paperwork early on and Chris delivered it. We wanted to take the final paperwork together to make it a memorable and special moment.
Here is how it went down.
I got off work and picked Chris up at the house. We had the large manilla enveloped packed with all kinds of invasive identifying information. We took the paperwork downtown to the heart of the city and parked in a somewhat shady parking garage. Once we reached the correct floor, we walked into a tight waiting room and waited to speak to the receptionist. She took our paperwork in a total of five seconds and ...that completes the moment. I'm sure many of you reading this are so moved that you crying at this point. :)
The next step is to wait for all the paperwork to be processed and for our social worker to have knee surgery and recovery time. After all of that, we will schedule our seven hour home visit. Chris and I are excited and anxious. We have a lot to prepare for and look forward to those things to distract us from counting down every day, hour, or minute at a time.

Mother's Day
Last we posted, Chris and I had filled out our application and sent it in to Catholic Charities and were waiting to hear something. Then on Mother's Day at 7:00P.M. the phone rang. It was the social worker assigned to our case. She said she wanted to meet with us the following evening for about two hours to go through the orientation. Needless to say, Chris and I were a little more than excited.
The next evening, she showed up right on time. We sat around the table and took in everything. It wasn't quite as overwhelming as we thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, there was a mound of paperwork and another mound of literature that needed to be filled out and read, but it all seemed manageable. Our social worker was straight forward, reassuring, passionate, and humorous. She told us that from that point on she was going to be our advocate, that she was excited about our application because we were open to more babies than most couples, and that on average this whole process takes about a year. She made sure to include that it could take longer or shorter, but that most pregnant moms have to wait 9 months anyway, so we should be ready for that kind of wait. Everything she said was positive and encouraging.
As of today, we have completed and sent in half of our paperwork. By the end of this weekend, we hope to have the rest of the forms filled out and start on our autobiographies. It is always easier when the ball is in our court and we can see the progress of the paperwork getting completed. It becomes hard when we have to be patient and wait for news. We are getting ready to round the corner to the waiting part, so please pray for us.

The Garage Sale was a Hit!
The garage sale was a huge success! Thank you to all of those that donated and shopped. It is because of your support that we were able to raise a lot of money for our adoption.
It is amazing how many lives have been touched by adoption. Chris and I had made signs and posted them around the sale that said that all the proceeds would go for adoption. So many people came up and told their stories of either how they had adopted, were adopted, or were even saved from foster care because of adoption. It was a wonderful day that led to a motivational high for both Chris and me.
Currently, we have turned in our application and are waiting as it is being processed. Meanwhile, we have plans to meet with good friends and learn as much of the home study process as possible.
It seems as though, those who have adopted join an unspoken club where they bond together to make new adoptive parents feel as though everything is doable and normal. They reach out with phone numbers and much needed advice. It has been wonderful.

The Application Is In!
Chris and I finished the application on Thursday night and sent it in on Friday. We were so excited to get things moving forward. Now, we will wait for our application to be processed and then our social worker will call us and meet with us. As we wait, our plans are to baby proof the house and to continue to get things ready for the home study. We will keep you posted!

Spring Cleaning!
We are having a neighborhood garage sale on Saturday, May 1, 2010, from 7 - 4. Compromise
So you know how I said that I told Chris I didn't want to get anything new for the room until we got it painted? Well...the room is now painted. Here is how it happened.
Chris and I went to lunch on Saturday and were trying to figure out what we wanted to do with the rest of the day. We decided we would go to Baby's R Us to look at different color schemes and bed sets. We tried not to focus on any more than that because it can become overwhelming pretty quick. We noticed that a pale green could be found in both the boy and girl bed sets, so we bought a fitted sheet with no intent of painting. (Well not me any way!)
Before we left the store, Chris was ready to buy a bed set or blankets or whatever else looked good at the time. He is more of the personality that thinks, "Well, while we are here it only makes sense to purchase all that looks good."
I, on the other hand, see my options, walk back-and-forth twenty times and then think, "I don't know for sure that we have found the perfect things yet. Let's ponder what we saw for two weeks and continue visiting stores."
After we left with a fitted sheet and a baby gate for our stairs (good for dogs too), we headed home. We took a small detour to Home Depot and bought paint to match the sheet. Chris called Jodi and she was on her way to help. We got the room all painted by ten o'clock on Saturday night. The only problem was that we needed to paint the woodwork white so it matched the baby furniture better than a different stain of wood. Chris got all the woodwork done and now the room is really starting to come together. I will post pictures soon.

Moving Forward
After getting the news about Bulgaria being one of the only countries we could adopt from, Chris and I really started to settle into domestic adoption. One of the first things we did was call my aunt. She is a wonderful resource on domestic adoption because she used to council birth moms looking to adopt.
When she came over, she settled some of our biggest fears with domestic adoption (i.e. open vs. closed, birth mothers backing out, etc.). She informed us that, when going through an agency, it is very unlikely that a birth mother will back out because they have support and counseling throughout the process. She suggested a semi-open adoption where only first names are used, so that we could meet before hand and be given medical histories. Patty (my aunt) is currently working for Catholic Charities which is an agency for adoption.
There are some really great things about Catholic Charities that set them apart from other agencies. First, you do not have to be catholic to adopt from them. Instead of a very loose guideline of fees, they take ten percent of your income from the previous year. They do the home study and matching up adoptive parents to children. They are well know throughout the area for support of birth moms, and they have already had nine adoptions since January. We were informed that if we went with them, the home study process would take 120 days to complete. That is with us filling out our paperwork, the social working administering the home study, and the report being written up and filed.
Yesterday we filled out an interest inventory packet about ourselves and faxed it off today. They wanted to know what we would be comfortable with in the way of special needs, ethnicity, birth mother habits/addictions and so on. Chris and I had previously had conversations about this, but yesterday really solidified what we already knew. Chris was able to fax the paperwork off today, and now we are just waiting for them to contact us on the next step.
Meanwhile...
Chris and I have purchased a convertible bed and dresser from Nebraska Furniture Mart. (See attached pictures.) I told Chris, I would like to paint the room before we get anything else. Neither one of us are really big on painting, but my sister-in-law, Jodi, assures me that she will help. So, thanks in advance Jodi! Right now we are thinking of going with a light green. We have also picked up a bottle of Dreft detergent and a package of safety plug protectors for the wall outlets. Sometimes it is the little things that keep us motivated! To all you parents, please give us feedback on what we should be looking into getting. You can see how random we are with our purchases.

Getting Together
The March Madness get together was a huge success! Vickie and Ethan had everything planned out so well, that Chris and I felt pretty useless as we showed up early to try and help.
Once the game was on and the food put out, people started showing up. Only a few people watched the actual basketball games while everyone visited and walked back-and-forth in front of the TV!
One of my favorite parts of the evening was when a selected group of people played my favorite game called True Colors. In this game everyone answers a single question by voting on which person in the circle would most likely do whatever it said on the card. It is always interesting to see how you view people and how people view you. What a great game!
Thank you all for your generosity of donations and time. We really enjoyed catching up and getting to know some of you even better. Thank you to Steve for bringing snacks and providing the drinks. Thank you to Vickie and Ethan for putting this on and for being so supportive throughout this whole process.

March Madness
Well, March Madness isn't quite coming out the way some of us had hoped, but my sister is still having a get together tomorrow throughout the day where we are inviting friends to come together, eat good food, play some games and enjoy some basketball. She created this day as a fundraiser to help us offset the cost of our adoption. She was asking for a $10 donation at the door. If you are not able to donate and would still like to come and hang out, send me an email or give me a call and I will give you directions. We would love to see you there.

More to Come
At first, Chris and I were reluctant to really put our news out there for everyone to view because as we were learning more and more the outcome seemed so far away. Once we figured things out and started talking to more people that have either been through or involved in the adoption process, we became too excited to hold it in any longer. I am so glad we started this blog because in the last couple of weeks, the outpouring of support has been amazing. We have felt encouraged and motivated to move ahead knowing this process is long and unpredictable. Thank you all for your encouragement. Chris and I will be visiting your comments time and time again simply because they mean so much.

Big News!
Chris and I are looking to adopt! We have been researching and learning the terminology involved with adoption for the last several months. We are excited and getting closer to making a decision on what type of adoption will work best for us.
Our First Step
We first met with an agency that primarily deals with domestic adoption. That company laid out six different adoption plans, that at the time seemed very overwhelming. After leaving, we thought we had narrowed our adoption down to an international adoption focusing in Asia.
Our Next Step
We met with an international agency recommended by our dear friend. Immediately, we felt a connection with the woman who would be our case worker and administer our home study. We knew without a doubt, that no question was a "stupid question" and that she would be walking us through every step of the way. Things were going great!
Then, when we started sharing more information (specifically about our medical histories) the brakes were put on. China quickly got crossed off the list. (At this time, China has more regulations and requirements than any other country.) The representative from the company, Nikki, did not want us to leave discouraged and promised she would look into other countries and find which would work for us.
Chris and I left reconsidering all the adoption options presented to us by the first company. It was suggested that the easiest way for us to adopt would be to do so domestically. One thing Chris and I have already learned through this process, is to not go into adoption with any specific decisions predetermined in our minds. Everything we have counted on or thought we knew has been flipped upside down and inside out.
Where We Are Now
Nikki, did end up coming through for us. She researched and called friends all the while knowing we would not be able to sign with her agency. (Talk about someone who does her job for the right reasons! No wonder we instantly knew she would be great.) She talked with one friend in particular that said Bulgaria we be a perfect match if we were still interested in an international adoption.
While waiting for this news, we prepared ourselves that a domestic adoption would be the path we take. Now we have more research to do, but our decisions are becoming more defined and each step gets us closer to meeting our child.
With domestic adoptions, one way of doing it is spreading the news to everyone we know in hopes that there is possibility of someone knowing someone that is wanting to give there newborn/child up for adoption. We are asking all friends to keep us in their prayers and spread our news.

While waiting for this news, we prepared ourselves that a domestic adoption would be the path we take. Now we have more research to do, but our decisions are becoming more defined and each step gets us closer to meeting our child.
With domestic adoptions, one way of doing it is spreading the news to everyone we know in hopes that there is possibility of someone knowing someone that is wanting to give there newborn/child up for adoption. We are asking all friends to keep us in their prayers and spread our news.
